Svart Records is proud to re-release Into Darkness once more, having only been reissued once in a limited edition during this millennium, putting the album back in print for a new generation of listeners. The band is a rare jewel amongst collectors, and audiences alike. Packing out one of The Netherlands largest stages, that particular Winter show, after many years in obscurity is a rare event that is still highly regarded today. The Winter come-back show at Roadburn Festival in 2011 was massively anticipated and held a captivated audience. Deserving of their special place in the pantheon of one-off classic albums, the Swans-like noise and down-tuned Earth-like riffs of Into Darkness went on to spawn countless doom and sludge bands, being an influence for an entire doomed generation. Their pre-internet infamy led to Winter demos being tape- traded in hallowed adoration by fans and bands alike, gaining notable fans such as Fenriz from Darkthrone. Their penchant for mammoth sized and funeral-paced, wasteland droning has become a touchstone reference for bands across the whole spectrum of underground metal. Perpetually out of print, much sought after and universally worshipped amongst those in the know, Winter’s Into Darkness was a game-changing classic.įormed in New York circa 1988, Winter played slow, deep and hard nuclear doom with a crust punk rawness, that came across like Hellhammer jamming with Amebix. Into Darkness has been re-released several times over the decades by those who tout it as a masterwork, but it's not.The ultimate edition on CD. There's a reason why other bands and works got the attention while this one vanished - those other bands were better, and made better music. Vocalist John Alman sounds bored, and his vocal lines just go on and on with no emphasis or any feeling - he sounds like he's just reading lines off a sheet of paper in a scary voice.ĭespite that some people line up to laud this as a lost classic just because it's obscure, it really is not very good. The songs just kind of thud along, with no build, no tension or emotion. Slow music can be tremendously affecting when it has compelling melody and atmosphere, which this does not really have. This is a dreadfully slow and pretty dull album of studious clunking riffs and deep gurgly vocals. Pioneering this may be, but it's not really all that awesome, and I don't think Winter can take much credit for popularizing the genre, as it was MDB and Paradise Lost that really broke big. Winter were one of the pioneers of Doom/Death, releasing this the same year as Paradise Lost's Lost Paradise and ahead of other seminal bands like Anathema and My Dying Bride by several years. This album was almost completely ignored when it was released, and hell, I only bought it because I ran across it used - I had no idea who the band was. Odd to get a promo of an album I've had for 20 years, of course I have the Future Shock release from 1990, and this is a remastered version from Southern Lord that's coming out this month.
